Visitors are welcome to visit the crypt, located at the south-east corner of the church. Access is from outside via a flight of steps - unfortunately there is no disabled access.
There is a 21st century ossuary in the crypt beneath the nave of our historic church.
Displays in the church and crypt tell the story of an early Christian cemetery revealed by a storm in 1817 beside Bamburgh Castle. Archaeologists found the graves of more than a hundred people who had lived here around 1,400 years ago. They carefully studied the remains and then laid them to rest in the crypt in 2016.
Opening the Crypt and installing the displays was part of the Accessing Aidan project; funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery Players.
The video shown in the crypt may also be viewed in the church on the digital display screens. Click this link to discover more on our Anglo-Saxon history.
